MINISTER’S DUTIES DIRECT CONTACT PLANNED (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1.50 p.m. RUGBY, Sept. 28 The Prime Minister, Mr. Neville 'Chamberlain, speaking in the House of Commons said: “As a result of a request by the Minister of Information, Lord MacMillan, for clarification of his position, I wish to state that Lord MacMillan’s responsibility for the news does not extend beyond provisions of the means for its communication to the press. His function has been simply to issue from a central source whatever news was made available by other Government departments.
“Lord MacMillan is engaged upon a review of the arrangements for the distribution of news, including the question of. direct contacts between the press and the department.”
Mr. Chamoerlain added that a reduction in the number of British Broadcasting Company governors had been undertaken to ensure the smooth and swift operation of the broadcasting system, under wartime conditions.
Replying to the reference by the Leader of the Opposition, Major C. R. Attlee to the grave dissatisfaction at the fact that the British Broadcasting Company was becoming bureaucratic, Mr. Chamberlain replied that there was such a danger, but changes were necessary to ensure quick decisions.
