TE K.OOTI IN AUCKLAND The famous Maori rebel Te Kooli was in Auckland 50 years ago to endeavour to enter into legal contracts with the Crown. The following is an extract from the Auckland Herald of September 27, 1889: — “Among the natives staying with Te Kooti at the native hostelry at Mechanics’ Bay at present is Wi Pere, the well-known chief of Gisborne. Yesterday Wi Pore, who is well-acquaint-ed with native matters, had a conversion with Te Kooti on various questions. Wi Pere advised Te Kooti against going on with his action against the Govearnment, as it was not desirable that he should get to loggerheads. Te Kooti’s more immediate followers number 200, and he is desirous of getting them located on the East Coast on a block which should be given by the Government”
