WAIKOIiU COUNCIL .MONTHLY MEETEXT! PLANS I'ni: NEW URIDL'E (Spncinl to tlio Kernlil.) TE KARA'KA, this day. The engineer, Mi'. A. G. Lucas, was instructed at the monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council to-day to proceed with the preparation of plans for the erection of the Hangaroa River bridge. The Cook County Council had advised tire Waikohu council that it had decided to withhold any further objections to the erection of the bridge and the district engineer, Mr. 0. G. Thornton, had intimated that proposals for the erection cf the bridge could be submitted. Those present at the meeting were Crs. A. A. Fraser, chairman, M. Doyle. H. H. Dods. H. C. Boys. C. Gaukrodger, J. B. Williams and H. J. F. Tombleson.
Three ratepayers in the Puha area wrote asking for the council’s assistance in a request to the Minister of Lands for help in dealing with floods, to which their land was subject.—-It was decided to support the request.
An application was received from Mr. N. L. Thomas for a slaughterhouse license for premises at Motu. --This was referred to the Opotiki County Council, the slaughter-house being in that district. Mr. .!. K. Briant wrote asking that steps be taken to see that all dogs were registered.—The matter was held over until the November meeting.
Miss C. Guthric-Smith wrote stating that she considered the collection from her of a special rate for the Whakarau loan to be illegal.—The cleric was instructed to explain the position. Messrs. Burnard and Bull submitted plans of Joblin’s road for thet council’s consent. —The plans were approved. (Mr. A. G. Ilultquist, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter from the Under-Secretary of Public Works, advising that the application for a grant for the Rang a fir a road extension would be considered when the supplementary estimates were being prepared.
Mr. J. W. Fergie, railway stationmaster at Gisborne, offered the council the lease of a site at To Karaka for use as a pound.—The oiler was accepted. Notice was received from the Director of the Live Stock Department authorising operations in connection with the eradication of noxious weeds. Mr. O. G. Thornton, chairman of No. 4 District Highways Council, advised that there would be no extension in the mileage of the highways system at present. The Minister of Internal Affairs submitted an outline of an emergency precaution scheme for rural districts. —It was decided to hold a public meeting on Friday evening to discuss the scheme. Authority was received from the Public Works Department for an extension of the grant for Armstrong road
