WHARFAGE ON BEER
ANOMALY IN CHARGES INQUIRY TO RE MADE An investigation of the wharfage rales on draught and bottled beer is to be made by the wharfage tariff committee of the Gisborne Harbour Board, folio Wing statement's at. today’s meeting of the board that there was an anomally in the charges.
Mr. J. G. Bray wrote that because the wharfage on hogsheads and cases were so high in Gisborne, compared with other ports, he had been approached with the suggestion that the beer should be transported by rail and lorry. Rail and road transport' would not be satisfactory and would be detrimental to the beer ort account of the it would receive, and before yielding to pressure to have his supplies transported overland he had decided to seek the co-operation of the board.
"It has been pointed out to me," the writer added, "that the wharfage in other ports is not as prohibitive as ih Gisborne, where it appears a special rate is charged on these goods. The wharfage in Gisborne seems beyond a reasonable amount, being in some instances, approximately six times that of other ports. ’
Mr. J. J. Macdonald said there was an anomaly in the charges, and, compared with spirit's, the charges were ridiculous. A reduction in the chaiges would bring additional revenue to the hoard, and he urged that the matter be reviewed.
On the motion of Mr. I. J- Quigley, the matter was referred to the wharfage tariff committee for a report.
