BADMINTON

CUP AND SHIELD GAMES FIRST MATCH TO GISBORNE The first of a series of badminton matches for the Miller Cup and Spalding Shield took place between a team from Bartletts and one from Gisborne on the Gisborne club's courts last Thursday evening. The second match will be played in Te Karaka to-morrow evening, when Gisborne will meet a combined team from Puha and Te Karaka, and the third and final match will be held at Bartletts, which centre will be visited toy the Puha-Te Karaka team. The club which wins the majority of the games will win the Cup and the Shield. In future the holders of the Shield will toe open to challenge from other clubs in the Poverty Bay Badminton Association’s district. Gisborne won on Thursday evening by 12 games to nil, and 252 points to 79, but some very even games were witnessed. Results are as .follows, Bartletts players being mentioned first in each instance:

Ladies’ Doubles.—Mesdames E. Smith and Cameron lost to Mrs. R. Sloan and Miss M. Haisman, 4-21; Mrs. Clanachan and Miss Bourke ’lost to Misses Johnson and Ambridge, 2-21; Misses J. and E. French lost to Misses Taylor and J. Redgrave, 15-21. Men’s Doubles. —Clanachan and Walters lost to W. Hopkinson. and East, 4-21; Muir and M. Hopkinson lost to Sloan and Harrison, 9-21; Carswell and Grieve lost to Niven and Setoire, 9-21.

Combined Doubles. —Clanachan and Mrs. Smith lost to W. Hopkinson and Mrs. R. Sloan, 4-21; Walters and Mrs. Cameron lost to East and Miss J. Redgrave, 9-21; Muir and Miss Bourke lost to Harrison and Miss M. Haisman, 10-21;- M. Hopkinson and Mrs. Clanachan lost to Niven and Miss E. Johnson, 1-21; Carswell and Miss E. French lost to Sloan, and Miss M. Ambridge, 7-21; Grieve and Miss J. French lost to Setoire and D. Taylor, 5-21.
