HOCKEY SMOKE CONCER

FORESTERS CLUB EFFORT “HARD TIMES” EVENING Members and supporters of the Foresters Hockey Club gathered in the Athletic Club rooms last night for a smoke concert held on the “hard times” principle, those present arriving in all sorts of old clothes, some of the costumes being really amusing. A few went to a great deal of trouble in fitting themselves out, and a representation of Herr Hitler and another of a lady were easily the best of the evening. The chair was occupied by Mr. H. Le Bas, and following the loyal toast, the toast to the club was honoured, the club being congratulated by the proposer on its good record of sportsmanship over a long period and on its achievement during the season just closed, when the team secured second place in the championship. Mr. R. Watchman responded, and referred to the very even nature of the competition among the first four teams. Mr. E. Fitzmaurice, proposing the toast to the Poverty Bay Hockey Association, complimented the association on the good work it had done and the success of the competitions this year, remarking also on the great revival of Maori interest in the game. Mr. Le Bas, who is chairman of the association’s management committee, replied, and spoke of the association’s action in sending a team to the Dominion tournament as encouraging the allotment of tournaments to Gisborne. Other toasts honoured were: Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr. G. File and responded to by Messrs. K. Nicol. II K. Swan, R. Lowe and S. McKenzie: "Umpires’ Association," Mr. O. Wheatley, responded to by Mr. Pi. J. Surgenor; "Old Supporters.” Mr. V. Butler, responded to by Mr. H. K. Swan; "Artists and the Press,” Mr. L. Cooper, responded to by Messrs. W. Turbitt and N. Redstone. A toast was also drunk to the groundsman, Mr. B. Hart.

An excellent musical programme was provided, items being given by Messrs. H. Patterson and T. W. Ward, while Mr. W. Turbitt led community singing, and Mr. N. Redstone presided at the piano.
