MARINE PARADE WORK

NO UNEMPLOYED MEN DIVERSION TO COUNTRY ASSIST IN G PRQDUCTION No men under the unemployment scheme will be available at present for the proposal to construct a marine parade along Waikanae Beach, the present circumstances being against the work going on under the proposals placed before the Social Security Department by the Gisborne Borough Council. In a letter before the council last night, the registrar of the Social Security Department, Gisborne, advised that a commitment in respect of the employment of Scheme 13 workers on the proposed Marine Parade, Waikanae Beach, could not be entered into at present, particularly for a work of six months’ duration, in view of the present circumstances and the possibility of an early resumption of seasonal work. It was also pointed out that the cost to the council was assessed at only £42G, or only approximately one-tenth of the total cost of £4196, and it was felt that the council should bear a greater share. The letter suggested that the work might be carried out in sections.

The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the Government was encouraging the employment of men in the country under Scheme 48, and in doing that it was assisting production for the purpose of increasing the supply of foodstuffs for tile Homeland during the period of the war. The letter was received and no further action was taken in the meantime.

The registrar of the department advised that authority for the employment of subsidised labour at Score Point Reserve and Waikanae Park would terminate on October 21.
