DEFENCE OF UNION (Reed. Sent. 15, 3 p.m.) CAPETOWN, Sept. 14. “tye cannot wait until the steamroler is on us,” declared the Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts, in a message to the people on the Union’s war decision. He added that a policy of neutrality would be fatal to South Africa. Germany could not be allowed without!"? fight to acquire a base from which tfie Union could be threatened, either by peaceful penetration or war. The Union's role would be the protection and defence of the Union, and its interests, including Scuth-West Africa.
