HOCKEY FINISHED

CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED Y.M.C.A, IN MEN’S A GRADE WOMEN’S TO HINENUI TAME GABLES ON SATURDAY So far as championship games are concerned, the hockey season in Gisborne is finished, for the winners of the various grades have been found, and there would be no advantage in keeping the games going another week, according to general opinion on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday. However, a final flutter of games with no bearing on the championships are proposed for next Saturday.

Last. Saturday’s games were somewhat of a failure. Only two of the country clubs were represented, possibly as a result of the ban on the purchase of petrol by private motorists, while one of the country teams which did turn out had only seven players. Retaining their three-point lead, and with only one engagement listed to complete the final round, the Y.M.C.A. team wins the men's A grade championship, while Muriwai, with an undefeated record, wins the B grade. Hinenui, also an unbeaten team, wins the women’s championship. Awapuni and Old Girls tied in the B grade. A Deciding Game Some interest was attached to the meeting of Y.M.C.A. and Waituhi, for if the latter were successful, or could even make a draw of the game, Foresters A would have a chance for the championship; but the Maoris turned out with only seven men, and Y.M.C.A. had an easy win to the tune of 10 goals to 1. Swan and B. Harrison scored four goals each for Y.M.C.A., and Richardson and Jones one each, while K. Pere secured the Waituhi score. There was only one game in the men’s A grade, for Foresters B defaulted to their A team, and a scratch game was played. Both fixtures in the women's A grade fell through, both Mahaki and Te Karaka defaulting, while in the B grade the games had no bearing on the competition, which was closed before the tournament team left.
