CHATHAM CUP FINAL
WATERSIDERS’ VICTORY WEST CHRISTCHURCH LOSE PLAY DEVELOPS ROUGHLY, (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Waterside Football Club retained the Chatham Cup, emblem of Association football club supremacy, when it defeated Western Christchurch by four goals to two, in the New Zealand final on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Jii, a match in which play swung from goal to goal very rapidly, the Watersiders’ bustling tactics and dogged defence enabled them to hold the speedy Western forwards, who failed in front of the goal.
Waterside led by two goals to one at half-time, and scored another goal at the beginning of the second spell. A goal, for Western, from a penalty, reduced Waterside’s lead, but good play by the holders enabled them to win by a margin of two goals. Play in the closing stages became very rough, and the referee stopped the game and spoke to the captains.
Scorers for Waterside were Longbottom, McCarthy (2) and R. Ward, and for Western, Galbraith and R. Smith a penalty goal. The referee was Mr. S. Donee, Canterbury.
