Two coupty cricket matches were abandoned, that between Surrey and Lancashire because ol the gathering war-clouds, and the Denby-Leicester game because of the sodden state of the ground. Two fixtures set down for immediate decision, Middlesex v. Kent and Yorkshire v. Marylcbone, have been cancelled owing to the crisis.

In the series just completed, several fine batting scores were made, and Verity, bowling for Yorkshire against Sussex, was exceptionally successful, dismissing seven of the Sussex men in the second innings for nine runs. Scores:— Middlesex, first inings, seven for 525, declared; Robertson 154, Eclrich 101, Compton 80. Warwick, first innings 194; second 131, Sims five wickets for 45. Middlesex won by an innings and 200 runs. Surrey, first innings, eight for 350, declared, Parker 79, Fishlock 70; second 212, Parker 71 not out, Pollard six for 05. Lancashire, first innings 211,- Oldfield 91, Watts five for 60. The match was abandoned owing to the crisis.

Derby, first innings 220, Alderman 91, Sperry seven for 48; second 234, Smith 81. Leicester, first innings 174, Copson 08; second one for 51. The match was abandoned owing to the sodden ground. Northants, first innings 138, Andrews four for 23; second 150. Somerset, first innings nine for 380, declared. Somerset won by an innings and 92 runs. Sussex, first innings 387, Cox 198; second 33, Verity seven for 9. York- j shire, first innings 392, Hutton 103,, Yardley 108; second one for 30. Yorkshire won by nine wickets. Notts, first innings 160, Heane 91; second 84, Perks seven for 30. Worcester, first innings 281, Singleton 102 not out. Worcester won by an innings and 31 runs. To-morrow’s matches, Middlesex v. Kent and Yorkshire v. Marylcbone,' have been cancelled.
