RAIDS ON WARSAW INTIMIDATION FAILS i CALM IN THE CAPITAL i (Reed. Sept. 2, 1.50 p.m.l LONDON, Sept. 1. It is most difficult in London lo obtain reliable accounts of tiie lighting. The reports arc often contradictory and confusing. Few dispatches are coming direct from Poland, the first for some hours being from Mr. Edward Beattie, the British United Press correspondent at Warsaw, who says that the raids on Warsaw appear to have been of a light character which are intended to produce a reaction among the population which, however, is taking it very calmly. Germany is carrying out a direct offensive in the direction of Upper Silesia which will be most effective hi cutting off South Poland and stopping war materials from Roumania. It is stated that an offensive is proceeding to Czestochowa and also to Dzialdowa. The Poles do not believe that a big offensive is likely lo lie launched from East Prussia, where Ihe garrison is believed to be weak. Reports from Zurich, state that there have been further raids on Gdynia, Viina, and the Silesian mining dis tricts.
