ADMISSION OF REFUGEES
IMMIGRATION POLICY UPPER HOUSE DEBATE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The debate on the motion proposed by the Hon. T. Bloodworth urging the Government to accelerate the admission of political refugees to New Zealand and to set up a Parliamentary committee to go into the question of immigration, was continued in the Legislative Council yesterday. The Hon. M. Connelly said that provision should be made for New Zealanders before more immigrants were brought into the country. He moved an amendment to suggest to the Government that a committee be set up to inquire into both points in Mr. Bloodworth’s motion. The debate was then adjourned.
The Property Law Amendment Bill was committed and the leader of the council, the Hon. D. Wilson, moved two amendments on behalf of the Government. These were framed to simplify the operation of the measure and the bill was referred back to the Statutes Revision Committee so that the amendment’s could be considered. The council was adjourned at 3.10.
