An increase in income tax, mainly designed to yield about £350,000 to assist hospitals, is a feature of the State Budget which was introduced by the Premier of Victoria, Mr, A. A. Dunstan, in the State Parliament yesterday.

There is to be 'no increase in the unemployment tax, which last yearyielded more than the £1,840,000 estimated. It is proposed to pay higherrates of sustenance to unemployed with large families and also to liberalise the permissable income regulations for men on sustenance.

It originally was expected that the year would end with a surplus of £12,000, but drought, -railway losses and other causes converted it to a deficit of £BOO,OOO.

The tax increases are: Companytax, from 1/10.575d in the pound to 2/-; personal taxation, from 6d to 7,id. rising to a maximum of 1/93; property rates range from 1/2 to 3/4 in the pound.
