FIRE IN RABAUL
LARGE STORE DESTROYED LOSS OF RECORDS (Reed. Aug. 24, 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 24. A Ratoaul message states that Messrs. W. R. Carpenter and Company’s store, a three-storey building, was destroyed by fire yesterday, most of the local records relating to expropriated Geiman properties also being consumed
However, the main records relating to these properties, which are of an aggregate value of £2,500,000, aie housed at Canberra.
Messrs. Carpenter’s premises burned like tinder. The fire also destroyed the adjoining premises of a local baker, a dentist, a solicitor and an accountant.
The damage is estimated at £OO,OOO
The copra stocks of Messrs. Carpenter and Company were saved, but the contents of the freezers, namely meat, vegetables and dairyproduce were destroyed, this resulting, in a’shortage of food for the local population until a ship arrives fiom Sydney.
