PLANTING OF TREES
SALISBURY ROAD PEEL STREET SYCAMORES Further Consideration to the planting of trees in the borough was given by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. A request that the council should extend the planting of trees in Clifford street was made by the Beautifying Association. The request was deferred until next meeting, a report to be secured in the meantime from the supervising gardener, Mr. T. R. Andrew. The supervising gardener suggested pohutukawas for Salisbury road. The borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, stated that the estimated cost was £54 for the trees, guards and soil, and ft the council intended to proceed with the marine drive there would be insufficient money for the Salisbury road scheme. —The matter was referred *o the reserves committee for a report.
The supervising gardener reported: “It is certainly a pity that Peel street has been .planted in, two different kinds of trees, and the removal of one variety and planting of another will not remedy this. It is also a pity to remove the sycamores and replace with something which will take many years to grow. One way out of the difficulty would be to remove the surface soil, which at present consists of poveriy-stricken and oil-poisoned rubble or gravel, and replace with a foot of good clay loam to feed the trees.”—-The borough engineer was deputed to attend to the matter.
