COOL PARIS RECEPTION
DEMOCRACIES OPPOSED Italian satisfaction WAR. THOUGHT UNLIKELY (Reed. Aug. 16, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 15. The French press 'has 'received the suggestions of negotiations over Danzig Icily, expressing the opinion that he Halo-German demand's are not likely to be acceptable to the democracies. M. Henri de KerillLs, writing in L'Epoque, says: “It is improbable that any German solution would satisfy Poland, which is what Germany wants, in order to say that her generous proposals have been rejected, thereby obtaining an excuse for action* But if a' conference eventuates, it is in Germany’s interest to put forward the largest number of claims.”
L'Oeuvre says: “We will not die for Danzig, and neither will the Germans. If we both die, it will be because Hitler, after criticising the ex-Kaiser, adopted his policy ini most unfavourable conditions. If he plunges into war, it wilt mean death to all Europe.”
Other newspapers exhort the public to keep cool and declare France is resoLved to block aggression.
Messages from Rome state that the Italian Foreign Minister. Count Ciano, conferred with Signor Mussolini last night. The Italian press continues to express satisfaction over the Salzburg talks, stressing that Danzig was the keynote, but hints that a large part of' the discussions were devoted to Italian claims against France. Other reports from Rome state that complete calm reigns throughout Italy. The Italian publici generally is confident that war is most unlikely.
