APPEASEMENT AIM
LONDON DOUBTS GRAVE VIEW TAKEN NATIONS INVOLVED RUMANIA AND HUNGARY DENIALS IN BUDAPEST (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 16, 10 a.m.) ’ LONDON, Aug. 15. The Manchester Guardian, says there is no confirmation available in London of suggestions of a compromise 'between Germany and Poland, though reports are readily credited because of the belief that appeasements are in the air. The possibility of them, however, seems more remote than ever. There is complete agreement between Italy and Germany, who apparently have accepted a general plan of action designed to eliminate Poland and subjugate Rumania. No attempt is made to conceal these objectives.. The German military experts maintained that a campaign against Poland would be long and orduous, but were overruled, as the Nazi leaders believe that it would be a short war and that the assistance of the Western Powers, if it came at all, would come too late. Hungary Marked Down
'Hungary is also marked down. There is no reason 'to suppose that the Hungarians can do anything whatever to avoid their fate.
The Budapest press publishes semiofficial denials of threats to Hungarian independence, describing them as products of an excited fantasy.
Whitehall takes a very grave view of the situation, tout does not believe a European crisis will necessarily come to a climax in the immediate future.
Warsaw messages state that Polish newspapers give prominence to peace plans, including the suggestion that America should join in a loan to enable Germany to shift from a war to a peace economy. The peace moves do not rouse enthusiasm in Poland. The newspapers putolish fulsome laudations of the Polish martial spirit.
