DIVERTED TO AUCKLAND
MOTOR SHIP DAMAGED TAILSHAFT BREAK FEARED SICK OFFICER ABOARD (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Diverted from her journey from Sydney to New York, the American Pioneer Line motor ship Tampa is expected to reach Auckland on Thursday morning to land a sick officer and to enable an insoert'nn to be made f toe vessel’s tailshaft.
It is understood that a fracture may have occurred in the tailshaft, and that, 1 as a precautionary measure, the Tampa will be escorted into port by the British motor 'tanker Edward F. Johnson, which is en route from San Francisco to Auckland.

Scan* details have been received of the nature of damage to the Tampa’s tailshaft which drives the -propeller, but the presence near the ship of the motor tanker Edward F. Johnson indicates that safeguards are considered necessary for the ship’s welfare. Very rough conditions are at present being experienced in the South Pacific and the Edward F. Johnson, now two days late in reaching port, has advised that she is uncertain of her actual time of arrival.
