YOUNG LAMBS SUFFER

Young lambs in the Kairanga and other areas suffered severely during the cold snap experienced in the Manawatu district last week-end. One settler on Newbury line said the conditions were the worst he had experienced for at least 12 years, and as a result he had lost a good many lambs. Sleet and hail, together with a biting wind, made conditions much worse for lambing than when the snow fell recently, and many lambs were born in pools of water and often failed to get to their feet. The minimum temperature on the grass at 8.30 on Sunday morning was 33 degrees, but had risen on Monday morning to 37 degrees.
