AGE BENEFITS UNEMPLOYMENT TOTAL 703 C The continued increase of New Zealand's pensions bill under the social security legislation is evident from figures published in the Abstract of Statistics for July. Age benefits were paid to 81.943 persons in June, compared with 70,503 in May, an increase of 3440. The amount paid rose by £28,405 from £485,970 lo £514.381. in June of last year, 56.224 persons received £286,885. The rise in the monthly payment over 12 months is 79 per cent. Figures under other headings are. —

Widows. —June, 8523, £67,705; May 7268, £58,289; increases, 1255, £9416. June last year, 5012, £39,536. Invalidity. —June, 10.609, £75,589: May, 10,122, £74,376; increases, 487, £1213. 'June last year, 11,132, £53,224.

Family.—June, 7803, £18,495; May, 6677, £i0.724; increases, 1126. £1771. June last year, 6481, £6936.

Unemployment benefits in force > n June numbered 7036, compared with 5565 in May, and the respective amounts paid were £52.342 (five weeks) and £31,825 (four weeks). Equivalent figures for sickness benefits are 1519 and 1201, costing £16,325 and £7624 respectively.
