FINAL CONTRACTS

STATE HOUSING BLOCK 44 UNITS INVOLVED STREETS VET UNNAMED COUNCIL’S SUGG ESTIONS Tenders for the final big contracts in the Childers road State housing block are being invited for the second Mine, 44 units being involved in two separate jobs. These contracts were advertised three months ago, but as only one tender was received it was decided to invite fresh tenders. One of the contracts comprises 25 units and the other 19 units. Most of them will be built on the northern side of the block.

When these two contracts are completed, the Childers road block will be practically* filled up with 120 houses, involving an expenditure of approximately £150,000, including the fencing and drainage. Already 78 houses have been completed or are under construction. Of these 33 have been occupied.

So far the new streets in the block have not been named. The Borough Council was asked a few months ago to submit suggestions, and these were sent, but no reply has been received vet from the State Housing Department. ,• Historical Names The names .proposed by the council were Endeavour street, Town ley street and Centennial crescent. Endeavour street, of course, was chosen as one of the names to perpetuate -the memory of Captain Cook s vessel which provided the first landing party on New Zealand shores, and as this event took place at Gisborne it was considered appropriate that one of the streets in the town should be named after Cook’s ship.

Townley street was suggested because the late Mr. John Townley, a former Mayor of the town, had done much in the interests of the borough, his being one of the names that stood out in the list of past mayors.

Centennial crescent was also' considered appropriate, as the State housing block was scheduled for compleUon in centennial year. The street for which /this name was proposed is the mam one in the block, taking a sweep from Childers road to Northcote road.
