Manchester Unity Oddfellows A meeting of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows Loyal Gisborne Lodge, 6087, was held last evening, Sister G. E. Wallen, N.G., presiding over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for the anniversary dinner on September 25, when the district grand master will be present, while it was reported that visitors from the Opotiki and Wairoa lodges were also expected. It was agreed that members’ wives would be admitted to the function. The secretary, Bro C. H. Ambridge, P.D.G.M., reported that the sick list was still a long one, and the quarter ending August 31 was likely to prove a record one for the lodge in regard to sick benefit payments. Following the closing ode which was played by Sister McMath, a flag five-hundred evening was held for prizes donated by the N.G. The winning table comprised Sister V. B. Murray, Bros. F. L. Barker, T. J. Dunstan and Murray.
Satisfied Sports Patron Writing .from Matawai, a satisfied patron of Saturday’s sporting fixtures expresses the opinion that the success of the Poverty Bay Rugby team in the match with Auckland was equivalent to the defeat of Auckland itself, since the members of the visiting team were regarded by their manager as capable of doing better against Hawke's Bay than the first Auckland fifteen. The writer also compliments the Poverty Bay forwards, in particular, and suggests that the team might be further improved by the inclusion of a Matawai half-back, Sargisson, and the High School five-eighths, Whaanga, in the back division. In reference to the wrestling contest between McCready and Kirchmeyer, he offers congratulations to the winner and to the referee, Mr. T. Smale, on the recovery he made after the knock-out he suffered at the hands of Kirchmeyer. The Gisborne Wrestling Association should immediately exploit the success which attended the contest, he considers.
