RANFURLY SHIELD
SEASON’S FIRST MATCH GREAT INTEREST AROUSED (Pfir Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Following the postponement of the Ranfurly Shield match last Saturday, interest flagged considerably, but yesterday it revived and this morning greatly increased' following the arrival of large crowds from Otago and all partis of Southland. Over 3000 people arrived by special trains from Dunedin, while hundreds travelled by car. The scenes in the streets of the city were reminiscent of a Christmas Eve crowd, and good-natured banter passed between rival supporters of the two teams. Slight rain was experienced last night, but the fact that the ground had been covered with hay will mean that the area is fairly dry for the game, Which, it is expected, will be witnessed by ta record crowd. The morning gave promise of a good day as the sum shone at intervals, but towards 1 o'clock when a large crowd was wending its way towards the football ground ithe sky again became overcast, threatening rain.
No changes so far have been announced in either team.
