TOP-LINE MATMEN

McCREADY—KIRCHMEYER

NEXT GISBQHNE MATCH

Wrestling patrons and sports enthusiasts 'generally will regard Saturday, August 12, las a date of importance in the local history -of the mat game. If the professional contest planned for that date by the Gisborne association is. successful enough to offset the disappointment of the season’s two earlier ■bouts, wrestling may regain its old ,popularity in Gisborne. 'On the other hand, a further disappointment might spell the finish of the sport here for a season or two at least. The New Zealand Wrestling Union and the Gisborne association are not taking any chances of the latter eventuality. To make sure of pleasing the crowd this time, the union has ■placed the services of top-line matmen at the disposal of the district governing body, and the match is to be between Earl IMcCready,'Empire heavyweight professional champion, and Rollend Kirchmeyer, an outstanding American heavyweight, who has been in constant demand this season in the Dominion. The Canadian holder of the Empire championship was to have wrestled here last month, but .an arm injury prevented ihis keeping that engagement. He is one wrestler who has never failed to give .a Gisborne audience its full money’s worth, and on the strength of the saying that “a champion is always worth paying to see,” patrons in this district may (be expected to give him as warm a welcome as ever.

Kirchmeyer .h'as not yet shown his skill in. Gisborne, but what he has 'done in the city rings, and the demand which city associations are making for his services, indicate that it would be hard to find a better opponent for McOready from the present crop cf heavyweights working in New Zealand.
