P.R. Juniors 37pts. Wairoa Juniors 9
Poverty Bay’s junior representative team, playing in Gisborne on Saturday, found their match wit if Wairoa for the Junior Barry Cup an easy task, and it did not take them long to run up a formidable tally ol points. They won by 37 to 9, all the Wairoa points being the result of penally kicks.
Junior representative football has been strong in this district since the Great War, and the display given by the home team on Saturday was first class, even compared with the best of other seasons. Wairoa were soundly beaten, but they were up against a quality team, and their defeat was not a matter for heart-burnings. The Bay team opened with ihe wind behind them, and soon put the visitors in arrears by means of a field goal, scored from directly in front of the posts by li. Sebire. The snappy five-eighth made no doubt of the kick, which went nicely between the uprights with plenty of height to spare. Succession of Scoring: Runs A few minutes later M. Smale received (he ball on the Bay’s right wing and outstripped the defence in a run for the line, scoring a good try. Points came from two more tries by S. Lee and R. Carroll respectively. None of the tries was converted, but the Bay had a good lead with only 15 minutes gone and the score 13—0 against Wairoa. N. Summersby added another try with a characteristic run from a loose ruck at the Wairoa 25-yd. line, Sebire missing narrowly with the kick'—Gisborne 10, Wairoa nil. Before the interval Bell and Quinn 'each scored a try for the home team, S. Lee converting one. the .-core at the interval being 24—nil in their favour. The win dropped, as usual, as the game proceeded, Wairoa receiving much less benefit from the breeze when they turned round. The home Warn continued to show outstanding initiative, and threw the ball about in fine style, one passing bout sending over H. Sebire after baffling the Wairoa defence. There was no- convcr • sion.—Gisborne 27, Wairoa nil. Two Home Players Replaced McKinley and McGregor were injured in the next few minutes and were replaced by J. Barbour and 13. Fryer. Wairoa just missed a score when a forward rush carried play to the Bay line, and in a scramble for the ball three or four of each side were engaged. with the home players successful in making a force. The first points to Wairoa came from a penalty goal, scored by Carroll, who shortly afterwards goaled a second penally kick, the score looking much better at 27 —G, but the Bay again extended their lead when Fryer scored under the bar and Sebire added the extra points.—Gisborne 02, Wairoa G.
The visitors were going a good deal belter now. and (hough they were liable to get bustled when forced to give ground, they put up some good solid rushes, their forwards working hard and enterprisingly. They were on the Bay line more than once, but could not get over, and once again it was by medium of a kick at goal that they improved their score, Carroll goaling from a good position.— Gisborne 32. Wairoa 9.
In tiie dying minutes of the game B. Carroll added another try for the homo team, Lee converting it easily,
and ihe game concluded 37- —9 in Gisborne's favour. Mr. H. R. Heiford was the referee.
