TRANSFER FROM BRITAIN FOREIGN-HELD BALANCES (Reed. Aug. 4, noon.) LONDON, Aug. 3. When asked in the House of Commons to-day to explain (he outflow of gold from- Britain to the United States exceeding £250,000,000 in 18 mtont-hs, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Captain H. F. C. Crookshank, said that the United States had a favourable visible balance of about £280,000,000 in that period. It was well known that there had been an extensive movement to the United States of foreign-held balances which previously had been sent to Britain for safe refuge.
