DIFFICULT YEAR
PIG INDUSTRY IN WAIROA ( DROP IN EXPORTS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “The year ended has been a difficult one for those engaged in pig farming, as is shown by the drop of 90,000 carcases in the number exported from New Zealand for the season,” stated the chairman of the central body of the Wairoa Pig Club movement, Mr. A. T. Carroll, in his report presented at the annual meeting on Saturday. With a' large hold-over of mutton stocks, added the report, it could not be too strongly urged on the farmer that as Britain would accept a much greater number of baconers from New Zealand than .the total of the largest export season, to date, an increase in the product was urgently needed.
Pig club activities throughout the district needed stimulating, continued the report, and it was the dutv of the executive committees to do their utmost in this district, as it was only by their own efforts that progress would be maintained. The balance sheet showed an excess of income over expenditure of £49 7s 3d for the year, which placed l the body in a satisfactory position. In, moving the adoption of .the report and balance sheet, the chairman appealed to the officers of the various clubs to make good and foster interest and. enthusiasm in the pig industry. Mr. Carroll added that the future of the industry was exceedingly bright. There were restrictions on mutton, but there appeared to he no restrictions on baconer and porker pigs. Messrs. A. A. West, J. M. Taylor, and F. 11. Ma.rdon were re-elected on the committee .set up to deal with the special pig class at the annual Show
