REPUBLICAN SUPPORTERS SENTENCES IN SPAIN (Reed. July 28, 9 a.m.) LONDON. July 27. Messages from Hendaye state that statistics smuggled from Spain reveal that military tribunals in Catalonia during the first week in May tried 341 alleged Republican sympathisers of whom 268 were sentenced to death and 59 were sent to gaol for 30 years and 20 were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. General Franco is reported to . be seriously embarrassed by the rival doings of his pro-Nazi and anti-Nazi followers, though the position has been eased temporarily with the arrest of General De Llano. General Franco’s hesitancy a-s to where to turn for economic help is resulting in discontent among the population. Unemployment is growing because of the scarcity of raw materials. Some thousands of Republican soldiers are still at liberty in the Asturias causing General Franco to keep large forces in all towns throughout the Asturias.
