UNITED AUSTRALIAN PARTY LABOUR MOTION FAILS NEW SOUTH WALES VOTE COMMENT ON BUDGET (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 28. 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 27. The Labour no-confidence motion in the Legislative Assembly was defeated by 41 to 39 votes, Mr. E. S. Spooner, the former Minister, voting' with the Government, but six Government. men against it, revealing dissension in the United Australia Party ranks. During the debate these six referred to the Premier, Mr. B. S. B Stevens, as a dictator and expressed strong objection to machine politic? Mr. Spooner dealt with his differences in the Cabinet over the Government’s public works policy 1 . Mr. Spooner declared he had no recollection of telling Mr. E. M. Robson, a Parliamentary colleague, that the Budget had been faked. However, he admitted telling Mr. Robson he was very dissatisfied /'with the financial position. Sinister Meaning Denied Mr. Robson, in the course of his speech later, .said he wanted it plainly understood that Mr. Spooner had told him the Budget had been faked. Mr. Spooner said that he could not recall the words used, but if the word “faked” had slipped out it did not have the sinister meaning sometimes attached to it.
Mr. Stevens said that after hearing the speeches of Mr. Spooner and Mr. Robson he had decided that Mr. Spooner did use the word faked regarding the Budget, though Mr. Spooner, in an .-interview with him and the Attorney-General, had denied using it to Mr. Robson.
