UP TO EIGHT INCHES POWER AND ’PHONES OFF (Per Press Association.) iMASTERTON, this day. Heavy show and hail fell in 'Masterton during the night. Masterton itself is covered to a depth of six to eight inches, while m the country there is aver .a foc-t of snow in many places and up 'to 18in. in some localities where it mowed ,steadily all night.

Electric power is off in many parts of the country and telephonic communication is also interrupted. Thirty to 40 lines are out of order in the country, cutting off about 200 subscribers, mostly in the hill country. The snow will probably lie on the ground in the country for days, making the feeding of stock a serious problem.
