SNOW-BOUND DUNEDIN
MAIN STREET CLEAR COAL AND MILK RATIONED OTAGO ROADS BLOCKED (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The sunshine to-day has commenced a thaw and the main street nas been cleared to enable the trams to run o n the main lines. The onlv egress to the north is s id blocked at Mount Cargill and, after a survey, the Transport Board advised that the main north road ouid not be available for traffic over the week-end. The biggest snow storm in years -.truck Central Otago last evening, urd all roads are now blocked. During the night the big glass fernery a. the Botanic Gardens collapsed under th e snow, being completely ruined. It is hoped to get the air-liner away this afternoon, but there will be no south-bound planes for some i iys owing to the condition Of Taieri airport. Ail the Otago and Southland mines are closed and coal is being delivered in single bags. There is also ome rationing of milk. The morning express got away to Invercargill, but the through train from Invercargill was cancelled owing to heavy snowdrifts between Port Chalmers and Mihivvaka precluding the use of the north line. There will be a normal service o n the south line from this afternoon. The suburban train schedule has been restored. Waterfront work was resumed after the ship’s hoses had cleared the wharves.
The Storm is to take mails north to Oamaru by sea. transferring them there to the train.
