FERTILISER PRICES
INCREASE POSSIBLE AUCKLAND STRIKE ECHO REQUEST TO TRIBUNAL (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. It is understood that in the course of the successful negotiations between the workers and the employers that brought to a close the strike at the chemical manure works at Te Papapa. Westfield and Otahuhu, the question of increasing the price of fertiliser to compensate for the increased wages was discussed.
The employers’ representatives considered that the higher wages would necessitate a rise in the price of fertiliser, and it was agreed that application should be made on the subject to the Price Investigation Tribunal.
When the strike was in its early stages, it was announced by the union that the employers had tried to secure permission frojn the Government l'oi an increase in the price of superphosphate from £3 los to £4 a ton. The union then did not agree with the necessity for the rise. It is stated that the employers were prepared, if an increase of 4s a ton were made, to consider favourably air increase in the wage rates of lid an hour on Lne classification in the expired awardThe increase then mentioned was subsoquehtly agreed to by the employers.
