INCREASE IN OFFENCES

GISBORNE DISTRICT POLICE CHIEF’S REPORT (l’iir)innu'iidry Koporicr.) WELLINGTON, this day. The authorised strength of the police force in the Gisborne district at March, 1939, was 43. There has been no increase during the past year, states Inspector Edwards in his annual report. A section of land had been obtained at. The offence? return for the year shows a total of 1539 reported, compared with 15G0 in the previous year, an increase hi 29. Arrests and summonses resulted in 1536 eases being dealt with, leaving 53 undetected. The most notable increases were assault, theft of animals, drunkenness, illegal supply of liquor to natives, intoxication in charge of Motor vehicles, and other .breaches of the Motor Vehicles Act. The principal decreases were false statements and declarations, theft, false pretences. -house and shop breaking. The only serious crime committed was that of a man charged with murdering bis wife. During the year the general conduct of members of the force had been good and. their duties had been satisfactorily performed, there being only two defaulters for -minor breaches of the regulations.
