VIOLENT STRIKERS

MILITIAMEN ATTACKED CASUALTIES IN KENTUCKY NEW YORK, July 14. One militiaman was killed and five strikers were wounded in a clash between militia and striking miners at Harlan, Kentucky. It is alleged that pickets attacked a group of militiamen, who opened iire with their rifles. The miners returned the lire with pistols and guns until militia reinforcements arrived. Two hundred and fifty miners were arrested. Extra militia, armed with machine-guns and tanks, have been ordered to Harlan by the Governor, Mr. Albert B. Chandler. Harlan is virtually under martial law.
