GISBORNE RETAIL PRICE Potatoes arc likely to be dearer in Gisborne shortly, as a result of the firming of the southern market. Recently the .retail price was raised to 5-s per quarter, and it was stated- today that a further Is may have to be added soon, probably this week Supplies of potatoes in Gisborne are short, and quotations coming from south indicate that the shortage is becoming acuite there. The latest price available is £l7 per ton, f.o.b. southern ports, equalling approximately £l9 10s In store in Gisborne.

Rumours that the Government intends to arrange importations of potatoes this season have been current. They have probably arisen from the investigation which the Department of Agriculture officers have. been rfiaking into potato stocks, ’out they lack official confirmation. Mr. F. R. Pioot, the Director of Internal Marketing, was -asked -about the suggestion, end had no comment to make.
