SPEED OF LORRIES

ATTENTION TO MATTER INSPECTORS’ ASSURANCE As a result of the discussion at a recent meeting, Mr. G. Crawshaw. secretary of tire Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association (Auckland), interviewed the borough traffic inspector, Mr, T. G. Nowell, and the Transport Department's inspector, Mr. R. Metcalfe, with regard to the excessive speeding ol' motor lorries. An assurance that they will give special 'attention to the matter was received from the officers concerned, and at the monthly meeting of the copunittee a report on the subject was tabled by the acting-resident patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, who referred to the speed at which motor lorries were permitted to travel and mentioned special cases when tire 25 m.p.h. restriction imposed on lorries exceeding 3J tons gross weight constituted a hardship.

In many cases the economical speed at which such vehicles could travel exceeded that rate and, moreover, the limited speed resulted in these heavy trucks frequently holding up traffic. The report was adopted.
