OBITUARY

PIONEER’S DEATH The death occurred in Petono a few days ago of one of New Zealand’s pioneers, Mr. Maurice Drury, aged 88 years. Born in County Kerry, Ireland, in 185 G, Mr. Drury migrated to New Zealand at the age of 10 and settled in Timaru. After a few years Mr. Drury went to Wellington, where he entered the hotel business, having the Karori and Victoria Hotels. In 1891 he married Miss E. E. Lissington, of Wellington, and after a number of years transferred to the Manawatu district, where in turn he held the license of the Masonic Hotel, Palmerston North, and the Awahuri Hotel, Awahuri. Leaving the hotel business, Mr. Drury took up land in the Wairarapa district, and when the Boer War broke out he joined the Defence Department and remained with the department ml he retired.
