WOMEN’S A GRADE

LEADERS JUST GET HOME 'PmuHii ... ) goal Muhnki <• The leading women’s A grade hockey team, Ilinenui, on Saturday defeated Mahaki by a goal scored late in die game, which was even throughout. Combined effort on the part of Mahaki was somewhat better than in recent games. In the forwards, Miss Hale, right wing, was outstanding, while the Taihuka sisters showed promise of even better things, though ye* lacking finish. The team’s defence was particularly sound, all being well up to form. Miss Marie Brown, who scored the only goal of the match, was one of the best of the Hinenui forward line, while Miss Te Hau also did splendid work. Miss Wyllie, in the halves, was the best defensive player on the side.

KIA TO. VS LATE GOAL Kia Ton . . I goal Te Karaka 0 The meeting of Kin Ton and Te Karaka was looked forward to with much interest', because the first engagement set down for these two teams went to Kia Ton by default, and there were some who thought that Te Karaka at their best, would be superior to Kia Toa. However, the result was a win for Kia Toa by flic only goal of the match, which was scored in the last few minutes of play. The teams were very evenly matched, Te Knrnkn’s forwards being somewhat superior to Kia Toa s, but the Kia Toa defence was more than equal to ttie task. Miss Blanc played an attractive game in the Kia Toa full-backs, with Mrs. Watts also doing good work, although she was too prone to wander too far up field. Mrs. Pococlc played one of her best games in a strong half line. The forwards did not per-

form as well as usual, although Miss Whitehead used her speed to good advantage on the right wing. Te Kanaka’s forwards worked up good combination to frequently invade the Kia Toa circle, Mrs. Watene and Miss R. Ru.ru being the best of the inners, while Mrs. Edwards was prominent on the left wing. The only goal of the match was scored by -Miss Single, -who accepted . long pass from Mrs. Neilson on the 25-line, and ran through to beat the goalkeeper.
