WAIROA, this day. The Poverty Bay women’s hockey representatives on (Saturday won the Lady Carroll Shield from Wairoa, the holders, and a second Poverty Bay team retained the Single Cup against a strong Wairoa challenge.

Poverty Bay won the Lady Carroll Shield game by four goals to one, as a result cl' a masterly display of combination, which baffled the Wairoa defence. The game for the Single Cup was drawn, three-all, but as Poverty Bay were the holders. they retained the trophy. Both games were played at a fast pace, the 'ball travelling from circle to circle in rapid movements thn! kept the spectators in a constant pitch of excitement. Poverty Bay's advantage. in ibolh matches, lay in an understanding of each other's play, exploiting the weak links in the opposing defence. Umpires who controlled tine games were Mr. McLaughlin, Gisborne, and Messrs. Mclntosh and Tlair, Wairoa. In the evening the visiting teams were guests of the Wairoa Hockey SubAssociation at a dinner, Mr. C. Riddiford presiding. The Gitfhornc chaperon, Mrs. D. Turbitt, and the manager, Mr. P. T. Tuhoe, spoke on

behalf of the visitors, thanking Wairoa officials and players for their hospitality, while (Messrs. M. Pere, Hair and Mclntosh congratulated the Poverty Bay teams on their success. I goals Wairoa 1 A feature of the Lady Carroll Shield game, in which the A teams competed, was a display of combination and neat ball control Iby Poverty Bay, whose passes could not be anticipated until the 'ball left the players’ slicks, leaving the Wairoa defence much confused. The Poverty Bay win by four goals to one was a convincing one. Wairoa held the advantage at several stages, but were unable to finish oft their movements, spoiling many chances by wild shooting.

The two Wairoa full-backs, Misses Te Huhi and M. Pere, and Misses R. Riddiford and L. Single, in the halves, put up a great defence. Miss Single at times (being brilliant. The goalkeeper, Miss Walker, also played a good game, relieving on many occasions. The Wairoa forwards undertook some splendid movements with short passing, Misses J. Paul, L. Noble and L. Edwards 'being most prominent in this respect.

The Poverty Bay wingers. -Mesdamcs Nicol and Neilson. played with altrrctive style, and put in many useful centres, while Miss M. Graham, centreforward. played a hard game. The ■halves gave an attractive display, while (Mrs. Tuhoe, full-back, did a great deal of work in a convincing manner.

Mrs. Nicol scored twice for Poverty Bay and Misses Graham and Ruru once each, While Miss L. Edwards secured Wairoa’s goal.

SINCiLK (TP DI{AW Poverty Bay . . 3 goals Wairoa . . 3 In the Single Cup game between the B teams, Wairoa secured an early lead of two goals to nil. Misses I. McGregor and A. Smith being responsible. The first goal came after an opening made iby Miss E. King, while the second followed a bright movement by Misses K. McGrath, King and Smith. Poverty Bay’s first score came shortly afterwards, Misses Raihana and Watone and Mrs. Le Bas taking the ball into the Wairoa circle for Miss K. Taihuka to rap in a clever goal. Wairoa added to their lead when Misses McGrath. H. Walker and S. Keefe took the ball into the visitors’ circle, Miss McGregor snapping the ball into the net. From this stage Poverty Bay had the better of play, and Miss T. Whilehead secured the visitors’ second goal, and Miss Taihuka scored the equaliser,
