MEN’S SENIOR A GRADE
Y.M.C.A. TOO GOOD FORESTERS A OUTPLAYED Y.M.C.A 1 goal Foresters A nil A goal scored from a penalty bulb' in the first half on Saturday gave Y.M.C.A. the win over Foresters A in a game that was productive of some good stiekwork but slightly disappointing in regard to combined effort. Play moved fast throughout, and both teams stood up to a gruelling second half particularly well. Y.M.C.A. deserved their win, although they did not do so well in the second half as in the first. Both teams were strongest in defence, and some brilliant work was seen on the part of goalkeepers and full-ibacks. The forwards on both sides, however, were not up to form. . Forwards Disappoint
The only Y.M.C.A. forward to display true form was Bruce Harrison, cut he gained insufficient support from the remainder of the line. Richardson, who has played some brilliant games on the right wing this season, was unable to get in his usual fast centres, although this may have been due more to the strength of the opposing backs than to any fault of his. The half line worked well, with both NiCol and Crosby getting through some effective work. Scholium played a well-judged game at full-back, and was the better of the pair, while Coker saved brilliantly in goal. In the Foresters’ forwards there was only one up to standard, and that was Watchman, but the Y.M.C.A. defence left him no openings. Wheatley was distinctly off form, and the others~lii the line found the opposition too hot
for them. Ball worked well in the halves, but File bore the brunt of the play in that line. Stacey played one of his best games at full-back, and on the day was the better of the pair. Graham’s display in goal rivalled that of Coker’s at the other end of the field, and he brought off some good saves. Early Penalty Goal Y.M.C.A. had the advantage - of the opening stages, and after Graham, in goal, had saved several times, a penalty bully was awarded against him lor a breach in the goal mouth. Jones won the bully and found the net. Foresters already had made several excursions to the Y.M.C.A. end, and for a time after the opening score Coker was called upon to save several shots. The .second half opened at whirlwind speed, Foresters being penalised for off-side in front of the Y.M.C.A. goal, and then less than a minute later Y.M.C.A. was penalised for the same reason in the opposing goalmouth. Contrary to anticipations, Foresters stood up well to a gruelling finish, and had the better oi‘ the remaining quarter of an hour. The light was failing badly in the latter stages, and a white ball was used when the visibility became poor. Tiie game ended without any change in the score, Y.M.C.A. winning by the only goal of the match.
WAITUHI OFF FORM ’MIKA’S IMPROVEMENT Waituhi . 2 goals Waerenga-a-hika 1 Waerenga-a-hika College Old Boys turned out with a strengthened team on .Saturday, avid made Waituhi, last year’s -co-champions, who were off form, go 'hard all the way, eventualliy winning by the narrow margin of two goals to one. The game was not productive of good hockey, but play was hard and fast throughout. Waituhi secured a lead of two goals to nil in the first half, the scoring being done by Halbert and Collins.
In the second spell play was particularly even. The college old boys scored early, Farrell netting, and pressed dangerously on several other occasions, at the same time preventing Waituhi from adding to their tally.
