At the inquest on Peter Boag killed in the shooting fatality at Leoslon the jury returned a verdict that ho met his death by a bullet wound caused by the discharge of Trooper Ireland's riile, and that the said Trooper Ireland showed great carelessness in the use of firearms. Farming Affairs. Wellington, Jan. 29. The Hon. J. F. O'Loughlin has been commissioned by tho South Australian Government to report on the agricultural and dairying method in this colony. He arrived yesterday and after a tour of the North Island will go south. Tho Government is facilitating his tour. Steam Service to South Africa. Dunedin, Wellington, Wanganui Gis borne and Napier were nominated as ports of call for the Kent, the next steamer to sail for South Africa under the subsidised service. Heavy Compensation. Napier, Jan 29 The judgment in the Milboum .compensation case was given this morning. The claimant was awarded £141,862 for 28,857 acres, and allowed to retain (500 acres. It is specified that the claimants are also awarded £IOO costs. Elgar one of the assessors than dissented from the judgment. The award is equal to £4 18s per acre. The Government offered £4. Assets Realisation Board, Wellington, Jan. 29. The Motoua estaie of nine thousand acres near Foxton has been purchased from the Assets Eealisation Board by Messrs Stevens, Austin and Easton. Rumored Retirement of the Minister of Lands. The New Zealand Times announces that Hon. T. Duncan, contemplates resigning the portfolio of Minister for Lauds owing to failing health. Commissioner Tunbridga's Resignation. Commissioner Tunbridge is not sure when he will leave tho service of the New Zealand Government, but expects to be relieved very shortly. Breach of Licensing Lav/a. Donedw, Jan 29. Alexander Bowie, brewer, Caversham, was charged with sending a barrel of beer to Owaka without having on it distinctly written or printed a statement that it contained liquor. Mr Cruickshanks, S.M., was at first inclined to agree with counsel that storage- duty was suilbient, but after reflection decided it was not so, but as defendant evidently thought bo was acting in accordance with the regulations ho dismissed tho case. Gold Export Wellington, Jan 29. During the year ended 13th December, thera wsrj 508,045 ounces of gold to the valuo of £1,051,483 exported from the Colony. Arrivals and Departures of Aliens Sixty-nine Chinese arrived in the Colony and 87 took their departure. Four Japanese arrived. Aunng tho foreigners of European birth who arrived, the German were the most numerous, 255 landing at various-ports. The Colony's Finances. Wellington, Jan 29. A. statement of receipts and expenditure of the Consolidated fund for December quarter is published in to-night's CazMe. On the revenue account ordinary receipts are shown at £1,652,296, and territorial revenue £53,167. Permanent appropriations amounted to £918,418, including £771,606 credited to interest and sinking fund, and £51,632 old age pensions. Annual appropriations reached £958,280, including £1,212 for services not provided for. Under the public works fund, expenditure on annual appropriations was £276.844. The balance at ihe end of the qaarter was £231,421. Customs Returns.
During the quarter ended December 31, the customs revenue collected at all porJs in New Zealand was £593,030, against £524,016 during the December quarter of 1901. Ad valorem duties yield £201,238 and spirits £120,859. Last year dG2,285,157 was collected aguinst £2,191,798 in thy preceding twelve months. Premier's Movements.
