LOCAL OPTION PETITIONS.
[per press association,] Dunedin, Jan 26. The hearing of the petition against the Chalmers local option poll was fixed for to-day. There was no appearance against tho petition. Mr C. C. Graham, S. M, said that he had decided he had jurisdiction, Adams had stated when the case was called on previously that he would apply to the Supreme Court for prohibition against his hearing of the petition, but he had not done so. He adjourned the inquiry until March. The hearing of the petition against the local option poll at Bruce was commenced at Milton to-day. F. B. Chapman, W. A Sim and D. Eeid appeared in support, and A. S. Adams and J. F. Wood house (co oppose the petition) set out, various irregularities. Chapman, in opening, said that tho Act might or might not affect the result of a poll ; but the poll could bo voided, though such eii'ect were not proved, but some Act or Acts had a tendency in that direction. In the petition there were five clauses alleged whi ;h tended to dofeat the fairness of the poll. Throe of these were positive allegations, and the other two were qualified. Nineteen witnesses were called in support of tho petition when the Cmrt adjourned.
