BLACKBALL NOTES.

(OVB OWN CORE SSPONDENT")

For the last two weeks the Blackball Coal Mine has been very busy. It is fortunate work should be so plentiful ju-t before Christmas.

The Blackball Sports Committee should be well pleased financially with the result of the meeting. At the last Committee meeting the treasurer, Mr Gerraghty, handed in'his balance sheet which showed the handsome profit of £ls. On Thursday evening the Christmas Tree and Variety entertainment was brought to a successful issue. Several hdies had worked assiduously for the last few days in dressing dolls etc. for a stall, and in decorating a monster Christmas tree. These were very artistically arranged on the stage. The entertainment was opened by an appropriate Christmas song by the school children, "High in the Belfry,” which was followed by "Jingle Bells.” The singing of the children was very good and showed careful training. Then fourteen very prettily dressed girls danced the maypole. TIT ■ Millington and Miss Elsie Robinson ».r„ to be congratulated upon this dance. Five members of the band and Mr Forsyth (piano) played the music. The distributing oj the presents from the tree, fish pond, shooting and variety games caused no end of merriment.

The entertainment was brought to a close by a very enjoyable dance. Mrs Millington and the several ladies who as* slated her are to be commended for the success achieved, avd it is to be hoped the entertainment will be an annual affair. After three hearty cheers bad been given the school had been declared closed for the Midsummer holidays. Miss M’Donald (assistant teacher) left yesterday for a well earned holiday at home, and Mr Wickes left for New Plymouth, where he, as the Grey branch delegate, attends the annua! Conference of teachers of the several Educational Institute.
