COBDEN STATE SCHOOL PRIZES.

(To the Editor)

Sib, —I was present at the Cobden State School when the prizes and presents were being given out by the Chairman, Mr Jas. Poulter. I was very pleased to see the great interest that a few of the Committeemen were taking in the welfare of the children. I was greatly surprised when the Chairman called on the Head Teacher and his assistant, to give a brief resume of the work done for the year, that they were both absent. It does not seem as if they take much interest in the children or the working of the School. Is it because they are workin? against the present committee, or have they lost all interest in their work ? If so, it is about time the committee took steps to try and secure a teaching staff that would taka some interest in their pupils and in the school in general. How ■ir, I think as the new School is opened and the school roll exceeds one hundred, it is time the committee applied to the Education Board for a pupil teacher so that the children can have justice done to them. Perhaps then the Hoad Teacher may find time to drill our boys, which has not been done for over a year or more. Mr Editor, is it compulsory for tie boys attending school to receive drill instruction by a teacher? if so, the teacher is not doing his doty, or the committee either. I am, etc.,—•
