The Australian Squadron. . Received this day at 10 6 a.m. Sydney, Dec 4. The squadron has sailed for an extended cruise to the Colonies.

The Labour Party moved that cottons be placed on the free list. A long debate ensued and despite the Government opposition the duty was abolished on the voices. There still remains on dragnet a duty of ten per cent. The House h still sitting on the item dealing with woollens. The Government propose twenty per cent while other proposals moved, varying from ten to twenty-five per cent.

Chillagoe Mines Company. An extraordinary meeting of the Chillagoe Railway and Mines Company was held to consider and issue £IOO,OOO by preference shares in order to obtain more capital. The Chairman's statement showed that the outlay was close upon £600,000 and the liabilities upwards of £500,000. They required to spend another £71,000 before the position could be improved. If the shareholders did not accept the proposal, the only alteration was to construct. Eventually the mooting was adjourned to allow the directors to consider the suggestion that they personally should advance £50,000. 150 Miners Idle. Brisbane, This Day. A hundred and fifty miners have been thrown out of work at Mount Usher through a miscreant blowing a winding drum to pieces with dynamite.
