Defrauding the Customs. Wanganui, November 12. A man named M’Ainch, purporting to be an opal merchant of Wellington, recently arrived here. He endeavoured to pass some rings set with opals through the Customs. The officials questioned the invoiced value and bad the rings examined, and it is understood that they were found to be considerably more valuable than he stated. The rings were impoundfd, and proceedings instituted against M'Ainch. The case was to have been heard at the Court to-day, but the man eluded the service of the summons, and it is believed has skipped the col >ny. Fatal Accident. Waihi, November 12.

A miner, Jerry Sullivan, fell down the shaft of the Waihi mine 110 feet. His back was broken, and ho was killed instantly. Ko had with others gone down the cage to a compartment, lifted the protecting bar and walked into space, evidently thinking the cage was there. He was married, and aged 35. Arrival of Professor Lowrie. Christchurch, November 12.

Professor Lowrie, the new Director of Lincoln College, received a hearty official welcome from the Board of Governors, and arrangements are to be made for a garden party later to enable students and friends to meet the Professor and see the kind of work done at the college.
