THE LATE SIR JOHN M'KENZIE.

Wellington, November 6

The M'Kenzie Memorial Committee met to-day and decided to erect a cairn on Puketeoitai, a high hill on the late Sir John M'Kenzie's estate at Heathfield, and to place the procuring of a marble bust for the Parliamentary library in the hands of the Agent-General in London. The Treasurer reported that subscriptions to date totalled £540, and that there were 23 subscriptions outstanding. Lee, Smith, Bigg, Thos. M'Kenzie, and E. G. Allen were appointed a sub-committee to carry out the works proposed. It was explained that the proposal to erect a cairn on Puketapu was abandoned owing to the prohibitive terms and conditions being asked for by the owner of tho land.

PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY.

DONEDIN, NOV. 6.

The Rev James Patterson, of Wellington, was nomited as Moderator of next year's assembly. The nomination was received with applause. In future nominations for Moderator are to be made by the presbyterians at last general meeting prior to tho meeting of the Assembly. At the Presbyterian General Assembly to-day the Rev 3 Gerguson and Bruce, (N.S.W. delegates) said a few words of congratulation on the Union, in bidding farewell.

The reports on the State of religion were adopted with a recommendation that a sermon be preached in each church on Sabbath observance.

Corresponding members were appointed to carry out a thorough scheme for evangaliatic missions in several congregations during the year. The report of the Maori Mission Committee was adopted approving of the approving of the appointment of Egerton Ward as missionary at £l5O per year and awthorising the purchase of a section and building a house lor him at Tuamarina.
