The Melbourne Races. Melbourne, November 2. There was beautiful weather for the opening day of the Spring meeting of the Y, R. C., and a very large attendance including the Governor-General, Lady Hopetoun, and Admiral Beaumont, The results are Maiden Plate —The Corsican 1, Falkirk 2. Patronus 3. Time 146 Maribyrnong Plate— Niphotos 1, Farewell 2, Great Sc it 3. Betting 6 to 3 Heloisp, 10 tc 1 Niphetos. At the distance Niphetos came on the outside, and won a good race by three-quarters ot a length. Time 1 21. Hotham Handicap—Ohio 1, Atbara 2, Acumen 3. Betting 10 to 1 Ohio, Won easily by a length. Time 2 37:}-. V, R. C. DERBY. Hautvilliers 1 Grasspan 2 Haymaker 3 Also started, Bonnie Chicl, Ibex, Rock Gun, Manlock, Betting, 6 to 4 against Hautvilliers. Ibex let to the turn into the straight, with Hautvilliers handy. Here Grasspan came on the scene, and after a good race Hautvilliers won by half a length. Time 2 37. Melbourne Stakes—Wakeful 1, San Fran 2, Sequence 3. Five others ran. Betting, G to 4 on Hymettus, who led nearly the whole way. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 2 9i. Coburg Stakes—Caledonia 1, Bcanhar 2, Fusiletto 8. Twenty-one started. Betting, 3 to 1 against Bcianba, 10 to 1 Caledonia. Time, 1 43. Encourage Stakes Ballyrogan 1, Withan 2, Flying Artillery 3. Nineteen started. Betting, 5 to 2 against Baliarogan, who won all the way. Time, 1 B£. In the Derby a protest was laid by the rider of Grasspan against the winner on the grounds of interference in the straight, but after enquiry the Stewards dismissed it,

Betting on the Cap is 5 to 2 against Revenue, 8 to 1 Wakeful, Hymettus, Australian Colors, 14 to 1 Haymaker, 15 to 1 Grasspan.
