GENERAL HECTOR MACDONALD.

(per press association.)

Wellington This Day. Speaking at the Gaelic Society’s banquet, Major-General MacDonald ‘said lie had every reason to be grateful to the Caledonians of Wellington. He had several communications from them while in South Africa, accompanied by very substantial sums for the benefit of soldiers of the Highland regiments. He arranged with the general officer in Scotland that he should have a record of the names of incapacitated men sent to him, and he would distribute the money according to their wants. Sir Archibald Hunter was now commanding the Scottish district, and in his capable hands the money is being properly appl ed. He might say one of the objects of his visit to New Zealand was to come here in person and thank them for their kindness in sending this money.

Later on the Premier took the occasion to say that Captain Russell and himself were agreed on one point, and that was that New Zealanders were determined, so far as it lay in their power, to assist in maintaining the Great Empire to which they belonged.
